Big Chief Passes

As an African American child growing up in the 7th ward during the 50s, 60s and 70s, my Mardi Gras consisted of costumes made by my grandmother, calals for breakfast and the walk from home to St. Bernard and N. Claiborne Avenues. Our walk would end at my grandfather's house on Marais & Pauger Streets where the Yellow Pocahontas stopped at the Pondarosa Lounge for refreshments and pit stops. It was overwhelming to a young child to see the sparkling, massive feathers and beads coming down the street with masses advancing to let us know that the "Injuns are comin'."

Yesterday afternoon a NOPD officer, Lt. Kevin Anderson, made a visit to the Voobrew Coffee Shop, 830 N. Rampart, (I own the building, but rent it to Keith and Andre West-Harrison) to warn them they will be shut down and issued a court summons Monday night if they present a live music performance by John Boutte.
