Kid's Dance Camp volunteers needed
06/20/06 by dnoteam
Below is a message from Lane Barry on an opportunity for us to share ballroom dancing with youth participating in "Kid's Camp" at Cortana Mall, Baton Rouge, LA. Sharing dancing with youth is a very important aspect of our mission. We plan to teach Rumba to these kids and need people of any dance level to help. Please respond to this message by contacting Lane [(w) 225-578-3865 or (h) 225-768-8814] or me [ (home/office) 504-833-1871 or Cell #: 504-427-6483] to volunteer.
See all the details in Lane's message. We'd love to see members and friends from across our area and age levels join in the fun to support this extremely important of this effort: between 10 - 1, Tuesdays, July 11, 18 and/or 25.
Kerry
President, USA Dance Chapter 5031
New Orleans/Baton Rouge/Houma Areas
Hello everyone! Part of our mission in USA Dance is to bring ballroom dance to young people, and we have an opportunity to do just that in Baton Rouge at Cortana Mall in July.
“Kid’s Camp” at Cortana Mall allows kids (ages 5-11) to enjoy indoor summer fun including hands-on activities, musical performances and interactive demonstrations. The organizer has asked USA Dance to participate by introducing ballroom dancing to the kids. Our president, Kerry Lovell, is very excited about participating in this project, but we need your help.
Here’s how it works. During each day of Kids Camp, from 10am to 1pm, kids will stop at each “zone” at 3 different areas of the mall and will stay at each for around 20 minutes at a time. About 200 kids participate, but they will not be all together as a group of 200. They will stop at the different areas at their own pace.
At the ballroom zone, the girls will be in one line and learn the basic rumba step. Similarly, the boys will form a line facing the girls and learn the men’s part. After practicing, the two lines will come together, partner, and try the step together. The mall will provide us a music system, a microphone and floor space.
We need volunteers to help out! Ideally, we’d like to have several volunteers spaced down each line so that every boy and girl can get a good view of the footwork. Then when “the couples” try to dance together, our volunteers will walk around and help anyone in need. It will be very basic, so a dancer at any level can help us out! (Any pro’s out there who are free on a Tuesday??...we would LOVE to have you!!)
If you saw the movie, Mad Hot Ballroom, then you already know what a great opportunity this is to introduce youngsters to the world of partner dancing. The event organizer is convinced that our ballroom zone will be very popular since the TV shows have made ballroom dancing very “cool” right now.
Won’t you please check these dates and see if you can volunteer time to this great cause!? (even a couple of hours would be a big help. ) And it will be great fun!
Tuesday July 11 10am - 1pm
Tuesday July 18 10am - 1pm
Tuesday July 25 10am - 1pm
If you can volunteer, please contact Lane Barry or Kerry Lovell with the date(s) and time(s) you are available. Thanks!
